As 2021 draws to a close we offer this reminder to patients who have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or a health savings account (HSA) to take full advantage of the 2021 vision care coverage. To make the most of available coverage before the year ends, consider any of these options – which may vary depending on the type of account:
FSA dollars for vision care eligible expenses may include:
- Prescription eyeglasses
- Prescription sunglasses
- Reading glasses, prescription and non-prescription
- Eye exams and some procedures
Before choosing how you will spend your FSA dollars, it is recommended that you check with your FSA provider or your employer’s human resources department on exact coverage details.
Comprehensive Eye Exam
One of the best ways to keep eye health and vision at peak performance is with an annual screening. Comprehensive eye examinations are the only effective way to determine if an eye disease or vision problem is present. During these routine exams a complete scan is conducted to look for any potential problems that need to be addressed. Annual eye exams are often included in FSA and HSA so there’s no reason not to use this benefit before the end of the year.
Use Your Vision Benefits to Get New Eyeglasses
Sensations of straining to see things clearly, or the experience of an occasional headache, or dizziness after reading or working on a computer are good indicators that it’s time to update your eyeglass prescription. If a new prescription for eyeglasses is in order, FSA can help cover the costs. If after the eye exam the prescription remains the same, vision insurance can be used to purchase new frames, or to get a backup pair of glasses.
As the end of the year is approaching, it is an excellent time to evaluate your FSA/HSA to make sure that you have taken advantage of all the benefits.
